GENOVA WEATHER GENOVA: School and Staglieno Cemetary/Museum
Angela: Today was our second full day in school. We started off with breaking into groups to talk to the younger classes (2-3 years); talking about anything and everything they wanted to know! We could tell that they were shy and nervous about having to talk to us, so we tried asking a lot of prompting questions like, “How many siblings do you have? What kinds of sports do you play?” Finally they began to come out of their shells and get really into the conversation. After that another group of young students came in and we had another go around at it.
Next we split into groups of 3 and went to individual teacher’s classrooms. Sam, Drake, and I went into Mr. Orlando’s English class and read poetry to them- seeing that it was an American poet it only seemed fitting to have the American students read it!
After that we went back to our classroom and talked with another group of students. By that time, it was the end of the school day for them so we got a chance to eat the lunches our Italian families made for us.
We headed to the Staglieno Cemetery for our tour and of course it just had to start raining! It started pouring down hard, cold rain while we were waiting for the bus; and to add even more excitement to our trip, when the bus finally came we had to pack 25+ people onto the bus that was already full! The cemetery, though, was beautiful and seeing how much back-breaking work and thought that had to be put into the sculptures was astounding. Not only that but to hear the history behind each and every statute was eye-opening.
Once we finished the tour we all packed back onto a bus once again and rode back to the center and from there we said our goodbyes to our teachers and headed on our separate ways.
